RUMFORD – There was absolutely no mistaking which football team dominated this game.
Mountain Valley High School took control early, utilizing its superior ball-control offense in a Class B Campbell Conference game Friday night at Hosmer Field.
Senior running back Eric LePage gained nearly 200 all-purpose yards and rushed for four touchdowns, including three in the first half, as the Falcons flexed their muscles en route to a convincing 42-0 shutout against Lake Region before an appreciative homecoming crowd.
Mountain Valley (4-1) relied on its swarming defense to completely bottle up Lake Region, which was limited to 81 total yards. The Falcons haven’t allowed a single point scored against them in three games.
“I’m just so proud of this team,” LePage said. “The offensive line was unbelievable. They was opening up some huge holes and that made our running game so successful. Every one was was working together.”
The Falcons recovered a fumble on the initial series at the Lakers’ 48-yard line and immediately set the tone of the game. A trio of long runs by Aaron Arsenault (17 yards), Robert Beadle (10) and LePage (11) gave the Falcons a first-and-goal. Quarterback Zach Fergola (4-for-4 for 48 yards) called his own number for a 1-yard TD. Ben Madigan kicked the point-after for a 7-0 lead with 8:45 left in the first quarter.
Mountain Valley gained 381 yards on 75 plays behind tackles Tristan LaPointe and Phil Smith, guards Aaron Robin and Drew Parent and center David Smith.
Lake Region (2-2) then ran three plays and punted on its ensuing possession. Quarterback Josh Woodbury was under pressure from the onset and completed one of seven passes in the game. Tom Daley was the leading rusher with 53 yards.
Mountain Valley received excellent field position again and Fergola connected with LePage on a 30-yard pass. LePage used his straight-up running style to score a four-yard TD. Madigan kicked the PAT.
“There are no heroes on this team,” LePage said. “There’s no individual that stands out above the rest. Every thing is coming together on this team and we wanted to prove it to the homecoming crowd.”
LePage (151 yards rushing) scored on runs of six and four yards in the second quarter. Arsenault gained 65 yards and Beadle had 45 yards.
The lone miscue by the Falcons was a fumble that was recovered by Frank Crosen in the red zone. The Falcon defense held again and LePage rushed in a 3-yard TD midway through the third quarter .
“We couldn’t afford to be overconfident,” Fergola said. “The score was 28-0 at halftime, but we came out iin the third quarter like the score was 0-0. Lake Region had hurt us with a counter play the past two years. Tonight, our defense shut them down.”
Leo Jolin scored on a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.
