There is little question that most people believe our property taxes are too high. We would all like to seem the lowered. This goal should be achieved in a rational manner.

The Maine Municipal Association has proposed that state government immediately begin funding school costs at 55 percent. This would add approximately $260 million to the state budget.

I would ask the association to provide information on what programs it would propose be cut or eliminated to pay for the $260 million?

If they do not wish to see it paid for in this manner, which taxes does it propose to increase and by how much? If they or other supporters cannot provide this information, do they intend to complain about the way the legislators choose to reach this goal?

It is unfortunate that legislators of past years have not kept up with the promise of paying 55 percent of education. It is also unfortunate that we, as citizens, have not forced them to do so before this. I find it difficult to think it can be done in one year without jeopardizing many other worthy programs.

What we need are legislators who will not pass any laws that are not fully funded at the state level. Legislators must not continue to pass costs down to local property tax payers.
