1952 – 2003

AUBURN – Armand A. (Tony) Benoit, 51, of Horton St., Lewiston, died Oct. 3, 2003 from a brave and fearless battle with leukemia. To his last day he fought his illness and kept his sense of humor. Armand died at Clover Manor in Auburn.

He was born in Lewiston, Jan. 21, 1952, the son of Theresa and Armand Benoit. He married his soul mate, Diane P. Smith, on May 5, 2001, who provided Tony with excellent care and was by his side until his last day.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran earning the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. He worked as a carpenter most of his life and was a former member of Local 1996.

An avid chess player and chess tutor, he was a former member of the U.S. Chess Federation. He enjoyed computer games, fishing, woodworking, ocean walks with his wife and enjoyed the love and humor of his many brothers- and sisters-in-law.

He is survived by his wife, Diane P. Benoit, of Lewiston; two sons, Jason and Donald Benoit of Wilmington, N.C.; three sisters, Jeannine Hotham of Auburn, Linda Landry and her husband, Leo, of Greene, Kathy Bergeron and her husband, John, of Auburn; one brother, Richard Benoit and his companion, Aline Fongemie, of Monmouth; step-daughter, Janet Smith and step-grandson, Alex Smith of Auburn; brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and special friends, John and Roberta Proctor of Lewiston and Douglas and Lynn Gibbert of Leeds.

He was predeceased by his father in 1964 and his mother in 1993. Tony watched over his mother in life. He will continue to watch over her when they reunite in the afterlife.
