KITTERY – Scott Wetherell rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown and returned an interception for another score as Buckfield/Dirigo picked up its first win in the program’s history with a 28-7 win over Traip Academy Saturday.

Buckfield/Dirigo (1-4) dominated from the first quarter with a ball-control offense and a staunch defense that shut out the Rangers (0-5) until the JVs took the field in the fourth quarter.

“They tried to open it up on us. We knocked down two or three passes and Scott intercepted one,” said coach Jim Wetherell. “Our secondary is really, really improved.”

“Our defense shut them down,” he added. “Harry Hayes had a super game on defense. He must have been in on 50 or 60 percent of the tackles.”

Fullback Craig Langervin opened the scoring with a four-yard TD run in the first quarter. Traip stopped the two-point conversion, and Buckfield/Dirigo had to protect a 6-0 lead for the rest of the half. Wetherell’s 40-yard interception return opened the floodgates in the third quarter. Langervin ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0. Then it was freshman QB Jamie Henderson’s turn to run one into the end zone, this time from 20 yards out, and Wetherell added the two-point run to make it 22-0.

Jacob McAlister scored on a sweep from seven yards out to cap the scoring for Buckfield/Dirigo.
