RUMFORD – After what the Mountain Valley boys’ soccer team had just endured in a chilly, driving rain at Hosmer Field on Saturday afternoon, it was fitting to see Jeff Fuller enjoy a post-game celebration by sliding face-first through the standing water along the sideline.
Fuller outshined the gloomy elements by recording a hat trick as the offensive-minded Falcons cruised past arch-rival Dirigo 4-1 in Mountain Valley Conference action. It was his second three-goal effort in three days. Fuller also registered a hat trick against Wiscasset.
Class B Mountain Valley (5-3) pressured Dirigo goalie Trevis Knapp from the onset and forced the defense to retreat toward the crease.
Mountain Valley connected first when Pat Harris scored an unassisted goal 21:13 into the game. Harris lined up for a free kick from 35 yards out and booted an arching ball over Knapp’s outstretched arms.
The soggy Homecoming crowd witnessed a masterful goal when Fuller scored on a header to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Seth Gallant outhustled a Dirigo defender in the left corner, turned toward the net and kicked a centering pass. Fuller was squared up and headed the ball in to an open net.
“Although we had a two-goal lead, I knew that we couldn’t let up,” Mountain Valley coach Aaron Perreault said. “I talked with the kids about that during halftime. We certainly had plenty of scoring chances.”
The Falcons held a 26-7 advantage in shots and took the only four corner kicks in the game.
Class C Dirigo (1-7-2) tried to get something going, but the Falcons defense recovered quickly. Mountain Valley goalie Cory Wilson (two saves) cradled a high floating shot by Jacob Maddaus before sitting out the second half. Andy Borning finished up.
Dirigo scored when senior Jon Pineau converted Maddaus’ pass.
One of Fuller’s goals was an unassisted effort.
