AUSTIN, Texas – Texas answered its critics Saturday. The Longhorns can tough it out to win a big game.

Freshman Vince Young shook off a sore right ankle to rally the Longhorns with his running and passing and scored the winning touchdown from a yard out on fourth down with five minutes left as No. 13 Texas beat No. 16 Kansas State 24-20.

The Longhorns (4-1, 1-0 Big 12), whose reputation suffered a beating after a 38-28 home loss to Arkansas on Sept. 13, will face No. 1 Oklahoma next week in Dallas.

For Kansas State (4-2, 0-1), the Wildcats’ second straight loss labels them once again as a pretenders for the national title and knocks them completely out of the chase.

No. 1 Oklahoma 53, Iowa St. 7

AMES, Iowa – Top-ranked Oklahoma looked sharp and overpowering in its tuneup for Texas.

Jason White tied a school record with five touchdown passes while throwing for a career-high 384 yards, Mark Bradley returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Oklahoma played its usual dominating defense in beating Iowa State 53-7.

No. 4 Va. Tech 48, Rutgers 22

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Bryan Randall threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns and No. 4 Virginia Tech beat Rutgers for the 11th straight time, 48-22.

Randall had scoring passes of 28 and 45 yards to Chris Shreve and two 10-yarders to Mike Imoh for the Hokies (5-0, 1-0 Big East).

Auburn 28, No. 7 Tennessee 21

AUBURN, Ala. – Carnell Williams ran for 185 yards and resurgent Auburn made a late defensive stand to beat No. 7 Tennessee 28-21.

Jason Campbell had two touchdown passes for Auburn (3-2, 2-0 Southeastern Conference), which has won five of its last seven games against Top 10 teams.

No. 23 Iowa 30, No. 9 Michigan 27

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Nathan Chandler threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as No. 23 Iowa rallied from an early 14-point deficit to beat No. 9 Michigan 30-27.

Iowa (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) trailed 14-0 in the first quarter before rallying with 20 straight points and held on for the victory.

No. 10 USC 37, Arizona St. 17

TEMPE, Ariz. – Matt Leinart shook off a leg injury that proved more scary than damaging to rally No. 10 Southern California to a 37-17 victory over Arizona State.

LenDale White, a freshman with 17 carries coming in, ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 21 attempts.

No. 11 Georgia 37, Alabama 23

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia scored 37 points by halftime – the most Alabama has given up in a half in the modern era – then the 11th-ranked Bulldogs held on for a sloppy 37-23 victory over the Crimson Tide.

The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and scored another TD after recovering a fumble, building a 37-10 lead at the half.

No. 12 Nebraska 30, Troy St. 0

LINCOLN, Neb. – A 10-point lead at halftime was nothing for 12th-ranked Nebraska to worry about against Troy State.

Not with the nation’s leading defense in control from start to finish in the Cornhuskers’ 30-0 victory.

No. 14 Washington St. 30, Arizona 7

PULLMAN, Wash. – Matt Kegel threw two touchdown passes and Jason David returned an interception for a score as No. 14 Washington State beat Arizona 30-7.

Washington State (5-1, 2-0 Pac-10) dominated Arizona in the Wildcats’ first game since head coach John Mackovic was fired last Sunday. Mike Hankwitz is coaching the team on an interim basis.

UCLA 46, No. 18 Washington 16

PASADENA, Calif. – Rodney Leisle returned from a first-half suspension to score on a fumble recovery and intercept a pass as UCLA rallied to beat No. 18 Washington 46-16. The 6-foot-3, 294-pound tackle was suspended for the half for punching a San Diego State player in the stomach last week.

No. 20 TCU 27, Army 0

FORT WORTH, Texas -Brandon Hassell filled in nicely for No. 20 TCU, keeping the Horned Frogs unbeaten in his three starts for injured quarterback Tye Gunn.

Hassell threw two touchdown passes, including a 40-yard strike to Bruce Galbert to start the second half, and the Horned Frogs beat Army 27-0.

No. 21 Minnesota 42, Northwestern 17

EVANSTON, Ill. – Asad Abdul-Khaliq threw for three touchdowns, including a game-changing 96-yarder to Jared Ellerson, as No. 21 Minnesota roared back from an early deficit to beat Northwestern 42-17.

No. 22 Purdue 43, Illinois 10

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Jerod Void ran for a career-high 119 yards and four touchdowns as No. 22 Purdue rolled to a 43-10 victory over Illinois.

The Boilermakers (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) have won four straight overall and seven straight conference openers under Joe Tiller, who became just the second Purdue coach to win 50 games.

Mississippi 20, No. 24 Florida 17

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mississippi kept its name on the ever-growing list of teams that aren’t a bit intimidated by once-mighty Florida. Eli Manning directed a late 50-yard touchdown drive to lift the Rebels to a 20-17 victory over the reeling Gators.

No. 25 Michigan St. 31, Indiana 3

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Jeff Smoker is making the most of his second chance. Smoker tied a Michigan State record with 32 completions and accounted for three touchdowns as the No. 25 Spartans beat Indiana 31-3.

Smoker finished 32-of-40 for 351 yards with two TDs.

, a rushing score and no interceptions. It was Smoker’s third 300-yard game this season and the seventh ofthe senior’s career.
