1909 – 2003

LEWISTON – Bruce Fenn II, 94, of 33 Douglass Road, Newry, died peacefully on Oct. 3, 2003, after a brief illness.

He was born in Brookline, Mass. on May 9, 1909, the son of Russell and Katharine (Whitney) Fenn. He resided in Auburn most of his adult life and lived with his son the last three years in Newry.

He was a graduate of Yale University class of 1932. During World War II, he was a Lt. Commander in the Navy serving as an Air Combat Intelligence Officer attached to the Staff Commander of Naval Forces in Europe. On July 3, 1933, he married Gloria Gross who died in March 1997.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. However, his passion was skiing! He directed ski schools at Bromley Mountain, Vt., the Lake Placid Club in N.Y. and the Wildcat Ski School at Pinkham Notch, N.H. He was also the Assistant Director of the Sepp Ruschp Ski School in Stowe, Vt. Mr. Fenn was a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America-Eastern Division and served as an examiner and pre-course conductor for many years before retiring in 1975. To his close skiing friends, Mr. Fenn was known as “gentleman Bruce,” to his loving family he was simply, “Pop!”

He is survived by his son, Bruce Fenn III and his wife, Susan P. Therrien Fenn, with whom he resided; his daughter, Kamala Lescault of Industry; 3 grandchildren, Bruce H. Fenn, Jennifer Fenn-Lefferts and Jennifer C. Gates-Fairbanks; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
