Maureen Goudreau is one of four finalists for Maine Teacher of the Year.

RUMFORD – Maureen Goudreau, French teacher at Mountain Valley High School, was honored at Monday night’s SAD 43 board meeting for being named one of four finalists for Maine Teacher of the Year.

“You’ve done a great job,” said Superintendent Jim Hodgkin.

Goudreau said she was fortunate to have such wonderful kids to work with. “We have some really great kids,” she said.

Goudreau, a fourth-year teacher at MVHS, was nominated for the honor by former Principal Curt-Randall Bayer, who left the district at the end of the last school year for a similar position in Idaho.

Nineteen teachers from across Maine were nominated for the honor. Goudreau made the top 12, then the top four. Marguerite Lawler-Roehner, a teacher at Westbrook Junior High School, was recently named the Teacher of the Year.

A reception is scheduled for the four finalists at Colby College on Oct. 21.

In his nomination of Goudreau for Teacher of the Year, Bayer said she used non-traditional ways of teaching French to students, was deeply involved in the school and its committees, and was a real go-getter because of her success at applying for and receiving grants for a variety of hands-on projects used in her classroom.

Goudreau is a Rumford native with a French background. Before entering the education field, she worked in the corporate and nonprofit worlds. She has a variety of graduate and undergraduate degrees as well as a special certificate in French language and culture from the Sorbonne in Paris.

In other matters, the resignations of high school teacher Erica Haywood and bus driver/custodian Carleton Dickey were accepted. Both positions are being advertised. Hodgkin said the high school principal is currently checking out a long-term substitute for Haywood’s position who will serve until a qualified replacement can be found.

Appointments were Kristin Brooks as a Title I educational technician for the elementary and middle schools; Katie Mazza as a literacy/math educational technician at Mountain Valley Middle School; and Pam Rousseau as the science department chair at the high school.

The board entered into a closed session to discuss contract negotiations with several of the district’s bargaining units.
