1908 – 2003

AUGUSTA – Maxwell Winter Moulton, 95, born June 23, 1908, at the family farm in East Pittston, son of Frank Guy and Florence Blodgett-Moulton, died Sept. 30, at MaineGeneral Medical Center.

He attended Pittston schools and graduated from Gardiner High School. He subsequently received an industrial arts degree from Gorham Normal School in 1933.

He thereafter taught in a one-room school in Pittston and became a school-bus private contractor for the Gardiner School District. He also served on the MSAD 11 board of directors.

He was the town clerk of Pittston for 40 years, retiring when he was 80. He also served as a notary public and a justice of the peace, performing what he called many “interesting” marriages.

He was known as a poultry man who raised hatching eggs, as well as exotic breeds of geese. He was a lifelong member of the Pittston Grange and a past member of the Gardiner Lodge, AF&AM.

His interests included hunting, fishing, gardening and studying Maine history. His favorite author was C.A. Stephens of Norway.

Survivors include sons, Alexander and his wife, Dorothy, Samuel and his wife, Lucy, and their daughter, Maxine Heath all of Pittston, and Cynthia and her husband, Albert Wescott of Norway; his widow, Ethel; four stepdaughters; and many grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Sylvia (Alexander) Moulton in 1978.
