MEXICO – Selectmen will discuss the joint meeting of the Mexico and Rumford boards of selectmen held last week about a proposed Route 2 bypass when they meet Wednesday.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the town office.

Town Manager Joseph Derouche said the board will decide whether to stay with their original position that opposes the bypass, look into restricting such a bypass to large trucks with specific weight limits, or call for future meetings.

He said a Route 2 Corridor Committee meeting will also be called.

At issue is a proposal by Rumford to circumvent a section of Route 2 that includes Mexico’s major business district as well as several narrow Rumford roads. Rumford officials have said that the bypass is needed for safety reasons. Mexico has said that such a bypass will severely impact the business district.

The board will also get updates on the recently held River Valley Expo and the town’s efforts to bring the Wellness Center under the organizational umbrella of the town’s Recreation Department.

Other agenda items include an update on the Mexico Police Department’s 12-hour shifts caused by illness in the department, action on a request to designate a crosswalk on Main Street in front of Dick’s Restaurant, action on a policy that provides guidelines for access to police department records, a decision on whether to install additional drainage at the foot of Granite Street, and a discussion on extending the deadline for participation by local businesses in a federal program aimed at sprucing up downtown storefronts.

The board will also meet in two closed sessions dealing with town manager personnel issues.
