The EL Drama Club will use the income for improvements in the amphitheater.

AUBURN – The Edward Little High School Drama Club and the Society of Southern Maine Craftsmen are joining forces to sponsor a craft show at the gym from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19.

The event is a fund-raiser for the school Drama Club and a selling venue for crafters. On sale will be handcrafted jewelry, wood, food, fabric and pottery. There will be no resale items or kits. All vendors are members of the Society of Southern Maine Crafters.

The Drama Club will be the recipient of the rental fee paid by artisan for the use of the gym and the income generated from the sale of concessions.

The club will use the income to build a deck/walkway around the sides and back of the amphitheater, which is located behind the school in the Elf Woods.

The club needs about $2,500 to complete this phase of the project, which began in the fall of 1995 when the club applied for and received a $4,000 Maine Humanities grant.

In the spring of 1996, after building the foundation, stage and four rows of seats, club members entertained their first group of Auburn elementary students at the Elf Woods Playhouse. The play at the amphitheater has been an annual event since. Additional fund-raisers allowed the club to put up the back wall and to add six additional rows of seats.

The craft society is a nonprofit, juried organization. Founded in 1968, the organization is self-governed. It provides its members, who are seriously interested in producing quality handcrafted products, venues for selling their products. The society sponsors a number of craft shows from Southern Maine to Central Maine to Mid-Coast Maine as well as a retail store, Stone Soup Artisans, in Saco.

Shows are open to the public, free.
