FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington President Theo Kalikow is inviting the public to the annual International Flag Festival from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, on the library green. In case of rain, the festival will be in the North Dining Hall of the Olsen Student Center. The public is invited to help celebrate the range of cultures represented at the college. Society meeting

WILTON – The Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Wilton Farm and Home Museum on Canal Street. All are welcome to attend.

Campbell honored

FARMINGTON – Farmington Police Officer Shane Campbell has been selected as Farmington Police Department Employee of the Quarter for spring 2003. Chief of Police Richard E. Caton III said Campbell was selected for his work as school resource officer at Mount Blue High School and his work on Special Olympics. Campbell’s work in the schools, particularly at Mount Blue High, has been a success, Caton said. When grant funding expired in June, the SAD 9 School Board, faculty and community supported the program by approval for another grant application and support for the program after the grant expires. Campbell’s involvement in Special Olympics included helping organize the area Torch Run and organizing the fund-raising drive at Irvings Big Stop.

FARMINGTON – The Sandy River Valley Chapter, MGS, will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Public Library. Program: “Exodus of the Bubier Family from Lewiston and Rangeley” will be presented by Shirley Adams. Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome to attend.

Dads and Kids

FARMINGTON – Dads and kids can make masks together from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Old South Congregational Church. It is free and open to dads and kids of all ages. Franklin County Children’s Task Force believes that Dads play an important role in the lives of their kids, and that fathers and children could use a place to spend time together. To create such a space they created the Dads and Kids program. Once a month on Saturdays Dads and Kids meet from refreshments, conversation, and activities. Mask-making

FARMINGTON – Dads and kids can make masks together from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Old South Congregational Church. The free event is sponsored by the Franklin County Children’s Task Force and the county’s Head Start and Child Care. It is also supported by donations from Farmington Rotary and Farmington Elks Club. The Children’s Task Force created the Dads and Kids program. Once a month on a Saturday, fathers and children meet for refreshments, conversation and activities. The Nov. 8 activity will be a scavenger hunt. Facilitators for the group are Jeb Enoch, father of three, and Tony Martins, a recent University of Maine at Farmington graduate. Huge flea market

RANGELEY – A giant flea market will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Wilhelm Reich Museum’s conference center on Dodge Pond Road. It will include “all you can fit into a bag” for $3. If it’s too big for a bag, then it will be half price. Everything must go. Since a lot of items were left over from the two flea markets this summer, organizers say they’re really going to offer some bargains. A large amount of clothes for all occasions and in every size, housewares, jewelry, books, toys, baby clothes and assorted collectibles will be available. Church speakers

LIVERMORE FALLS – Evangelist Greg Hubbard and his wife, Robyn, will speak at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, and at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, 14 and 15 at the Emmanuel Assembly of God. For the past 17 years, the Hubbards have traveled throughout the United States, Canada and overseas in places such as Egypt, Bangladesh, Greece, Argentina and Mexico. Each year they spend several weeks in district youth camps and conventions across the United States and Canada.

Early writer talk

FARMINGTON – The Historical Society will meet Oct. 13 at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church on Academy Street. There will be a potluck supper at 6 p.m., followed by a business meeting and program at 7 p.m. Allen Flint, a retired University of Maine at Farmington English professor, will discuss “Florence Percy’s Husbands and Homes.” Florence Percy was the pen name for Elizabeth Anne Chase Taylor-Akers Allen, a pioneer journalist in Portland and a poet who wrote “Rock Me To Sleep.” Guests and new members are welcome.

Grief seminar

FARMINGTON – A seminar, “Remembering Lives: Conversations with the Dying and Bereaved,” featuring Lorraine Hedtke will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18 at Franklin Memorial Hospital. The seminar is open to professionals and community members interested in understanding death and grief. Saturday morning’s seminar will be a practice-based continuation of Friday’s seminar. The Saturday afternoon program is particularly geared toward the general public. The event is co-sponsored by Western Maine Palliative Care and Hospice Coalition, Franklin Memorial Hospital, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, Community Concepts, Western Maine Community Concepts and Western Maine Community Action. Golf team benefit

JAY – The public can support the Jay High School golf team by participating in a Fall Fairways Golf Tournament and Silent Auction on Saturday, Oct. 18. The tournament, in scramble format, will be held at Maple Lanes Golf Course on River Road in Livermore. A prime rib dinner and awards to low gross and low net teams will follow the tournament. The $30 registration fee covers nine holes of golf and the dinner. People can register individually or as a team of four for the 2 p.m. shotgun start.
