OXFORD – Some scores went up a little, some down a little.

But overall there were no dramatic changes in the scores of the Maine Educational Assessment testing for 2002-2003.

The test results were released to the school board recently for informational purposes.

SAD 17 Curriculum Director Kathryn Elkins said she needs to study the results and is planning to have a report for the Oct. 20 school board meeting at the Mildred M. Fox School in Paris.

The tests are administered to fourth-, eighth- and 11th-graders in mathematics, science and technology, social studies, and visual and performing arts.

For the past three years, the district students have been between three and five points lower than the state average.

The state average ranges from nine to 15 points below the standard score of 541 set by the state.

“The state average does not even meet the state standard,” Elkins said.

She said this year’s ninth-graders will have to meet standards in several areas in order to graduate.

Elkins said those standards will be set by a local assessment system the district is setting up this year.

To improve math abilities, Elkins said the district is implementing the National Science Foundation program for K-5 students and another program for sixth- to eighth-grade students.

“Both programs are heavily tested and recommended by the National Science Foundation to increase student achievement,” Elkins said.

She said last year the district revised the K-12 science curriculum.

The board also received a report on the Scholastic Aptitude Tests taken by 146 students in the Class of 2003.

The tests showed that the 55 males taking the test averaged 509 on the verbal portion of the test and 533 on the math. The Maine average was 507 for verbal and 520 for math. The national average was 512 for verbal and 537 for math.

The 91 females taking the test scored an average of 469 on the verbal and 473 on the math.

The Maine average was 499 for verbal and 483 for math. The national average was 503 for verbal and math.
