OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Todd Jackson scored two goals and Jimmy Howard made 25 saves as No. 13 Maine shut out top-ranked Minnesota 4-0 in the season-opening Maverick Stampede tournament on Friday.

The Black Bears carried the play from start to finish against the two-time defending national champion Gophers, who came into the season on a 12-game unbeaten streak.

Maine, undefeated in seven straight openers, will play the winner of the Wisconsin-Nebraska at Omaha game in Saturday’s championship game.

Howard, who tied the Maine record with three shutouts last season, posted his fourth shutout in 22 career games. Minnesota had not been shut out in 92 games since March 2001.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal after Gophers preseason All-America defenseman Keith Ballard lost the puck in his own end. Derek Damon stripped Ballard at the blue line and passed to Jackson, who flipped a backhander past Justin Johnson at 5:48 of the first period.

The Bears scored three times in the second period to break open the game.

Damon converted a pass from Prestin Ryan 20 seconds into the period, and seven minutes later Colin Shields made it 3-0.

Jackson’s second goal came on a two-on-one late in the second when he pushed his own rebound past Johnson after taking a feed from Greg Moore, who had two assists.

Minnesota, which averaged 4.2 goals a game last season, tested Howard only twice.

In the second period, he flopped on his back to stop a Barry Tallackson goalmouth shot. In the third, he made a kick save on Troy Riddle’s shot from the slot.
