LIVERMORE FALLS – There’s no secret to what plan the Livermore Falls football team is going to use to attack the opposition. The Andies run the ball and do it successfully, as they proved before a grateful Homecoming crowd Friday night at Griffin Field.
Chuck Drake ran for a touchdown as the Andies built a 21-0 halftime lead, and he also kicked five extra points as Livermore Falls hammered out a 35-13 Western Class C football win over Cape Elizabeth.
Livermore Falls (5-1), which is close to securing its first playoff berth since 1999, was totally dominant. Its vaunted 4-4 defense limited the Capers to minus-6 yards in the first half.
Linebacker Jed Hiscock led the flurry with three sacks.
Livermore Falls forced a punt on the first series, and Brad Bryant returned a punt 75 yards for a TD on a reverse.
Drake handed the ball to Bryant, who followed a wall of blockers up the right side.
“We practice that for 10 minutes every Tuesday afternoon,” Andies coach Brad Bishop said. “We’ve got two good athletes back there, and they can make some things happen. I was concerned with our four procedure calls early on. It was a little lack of concentration, but Cape was moving its defenses around. I know that we can’t afford to do that against Lisbon next week.”
Two series later, Drake (54 yards on nine rushes) ran in a 12-yard TD. Drake’s kicks were each high and through the center of the uprights.
Just before intermission, Bryant (182 yards on 18 rushes) scored a 52-yard TD.
“We only put in three running plays for this game,” Bishop said.
“We wanted to run the ball right at them. I don’t think any one expected us to be 5-1 at this point, but we are. We won tonight, and the varsity got a shutout.”
Cape Elizabeth (2-4), who played in the defunct Developmental League for five season before moving up this fall, simply was unable to gain any positive yardage.
Quarterback Matt McClellan passed three times for 45 yards to Zach Nedwell.
Elliot Cohen picked up most of his 155 yards on TD runs of 45 and 50 yards against the Andies’ reserves late in the fourth quarter.
“We’re a young team,” Cape Elizabeth coach Mick Maher said. “There are a lot of different things in Campbell Conference, but we are learning. It will take time. We just couldn’t move the ball against their defense.”
Livermore Falls had interceptions by Matt Brochu, Drake, Carlton Jones and Mark O’Shea in the second half.
QB Dane Hanson passed eight and 24 yards to Mark Belmonte for TDs.
