LEWISTON – A Cuban emigre will speak on “Cuba’s Struggle Today” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Bates College.
Andres Gomez emigrated with his family from Cuba in 1960 at the age of 13, one year after the victory of the revolution.
Since then, he has lived in Miami, returned many times to Cuba and traveled throughout Latin America.
He initiated the “Antonio Maceo” Brigade, a Miami-based organization of Cubans living in the United States who favor normalized relations with Cuba.
Gomez’ discussion likely will center on the story of five Cuban men unjustly imprisoned in U.S. jails and on changes within the Cuban-American community in Florida.
The talk will take place in Skelton Lounge at Chase Hall on the Bates College campus.
