Once again, the Lewiston Maineiacs watched a game slip away in the second period.
Tied after a back-and-forth opening stanza, Val-d’Or used a goal from Alexander Kozhevnikov at 7:42 of the middle session to set the stage for a 4-2 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League victory before 1,851 spectators at the Palais Des Sports on Saturday night.
Lewiston dropped its second straight in a three-games-in-three-days weekend road swing. The journey concludes at Rouyn-Noranda at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The Maineiacs, now 4-6-1, received their customary push from Alexandre Picard.
Picard scored his team-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season in a span of 71 seconds in the first period, answering a Val-d’Or goal on each occasion.
Kozhevnikov scored his first goal of the night at 2:10 to give the Foreurs a 1-0 lead. Shawn Collymore and Olivier Latendresse assisted.
At 10:08, Picard knotted the contest, cashing in assists from Gabriel Balasescu and Jonathan Paiement.
Erick Lajoie retrieved the lead for Val-d’Or at 11:03, punching home his fifth goal of the season with help from Jonathan Charette.
Francois Gagnon went in the penalty box eight seconds later, though, and Picard needed only eight seconds after that to deliver the equalizer from Paiement and Francis Trudel.
Collymore and Francois Gauthier set up Kozhevnikov’s game-winner.
Gagnon garnered his fifth of the season for insurance on the power play at 12:37 of the third, courtesy of Latendresse and Charette.
Brandon Verge made 21 saves for Lewiston. Francois Thuot turned away 16 for the Foreurs.
