Auburn officials predict traffic tangles downtown

Two downtown projects will delay and slow traffic in Auburn all week, according to city officials.

Crews will close one eastbound lane of Court Street in front of the city’s Auburn Hall construction work this week. They’re installing precast concrete panels along the front of the building and will need that room to work, according to city Traffic Supervisor Dick Keene.

“That’s going to cause major delays for people going into Lewiston, especially at the morning rush hours,” Keene said.

“They’ll move those Jersey barriers out for the whole week and just shut those lanes down. I think people need to find another way into town.”

Crews will also be closing one lane of Main Street between Mechanics Row and Court Street for storm-sewer separation work. Southbound Main Street traffic coming from Great Falls Plaza or turning off Court Street will be detoured through the city’s parking lot and onto Mechanics Row.

Northbound Main Street traffic won’t be changed, according to City Engineer Steve Ranney said.

Crews will be delaying and detouring traffic in two spots downtown this week, Ranney said.

They’ll also be detouring Vickery Road traffic off Riverside Drive south of downtown onto Carrier Court.

“That’s going to be under way until the end of November,” Ranney said. “They’re actually doing a full road reconstruction project on Vickery Road, so they’re detouring the traffic into that neighborhood.”

Crews will be digging out the pavement, leveling and widening the road and repaving it, he said.

Ranney said Columbus Day drivers should beware of crews working on the island in front of Auburn Middle School on Court Street. Ranney said crews planned to take advantage of the school holiday to wrap up that work.

Lewiston paving

In Lewiston, crews will continue paving Main Street between Montello Street and the Greene town line. That work should wrap up this week.

Lewiston paving crews will also be putting overlays on two streets this week: Bates Street between Spruce and Ash streets, and Canal Street between Cedar and Maple streets.

Work cleaning and lining the water lines along Main Street, Sabattus Street and Franklin Street is scheduled to wrap up by Friday.

Crews will also continue work relocating utility lines along Plourde Parkway between River and Goddard roads.
