The “Think About It” people would have everyone believe that bringing a casino to Maine will improve the quality of life. They tell us we’re going to have 10,000 new jobs, property tax relief and millions of dollars for education.
What they aren’t telling you is that along with the money comes all of the other things that gambling casinos bring. More people, more crime, more addiction. The people of Maine are not going to benefit from bringing gambling casinos to Maine. The only people who will benefit are the developers of the casinos.
Any money that is collected in tax revenue will be spent on the additional services that will be required for all of the additional people that will be attracted to Maine. We’ll need more police, more roads, bigger schools and more city services to satisfy all of the city people that move in. More than likely, property taxes are going to increase for everyone.
It is really sad that the Native Americans that are pushing this think that bringing a decadent activity to Maine will make life better for them. Quality of life does not always come with a dollar sign attached to it. Maine is not about gambling, booze, traffic and congestion. Quality of life in Maine consists of wildlife, unspoiled forests, quiet country roads, beaches with families enjoying quiet time together.
Let’s not destroy all that is good in Maine.
