Once again, the pundits in Augusta think they know best what is good for the citizens of Maine.
With backs against the wall, given the citizen’s initiative of Question 1A, they have come up with an alternative solution to fund an appropriation that was created back in 1984.
Unfortunately, instead of providing a timely solution for their past transgressions, they want another six years to finally make good. We’ve already waited 20 years. Maine citizens can’t afford to wait another six years. We need relief now.
Furthermore, threatening additional taxes or the elimination of progressive business programs, along with even more drastic cuts in social programs, is patently irresponsible. Maine can ill afford to disenfranchise business anymore then it already has.
Perhaps the leviathan we call government has grown too large to be effective, and trimming size instead of programs is in order.
In any event, our Legislature, past and present, didn’t get the job done and now our citizens are demanding performance of the 1984 appropriation.
It’s time for our elected officials to remember who the boss is and that the wishes of the citizenry is paramount for a government for the people.
Question 1B, drafted by the governor and Legislature, is an attempt to derail the peoples wishes. Let’s tell them who they work for and that 1B and it’s timeline falls far short of the peoples wishes – past, present and future.
