The suspect faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

RUMFORD – John A. Lee was charged with gross sexual assault and assault in an attack on a woman Saturday.

Rumford Police Sgt. George Cayer said the woman walked into the police station a little after 1 p.m. on Saturday, identified the man, and police had him in custody less than two hours later.

“We picked him up on the street,” Cayer said.

Lee, 20, of Rumford faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of the gross sexual assault charge, a Class A felony.

Cayer said the Class D assault charge was from actions that allegedly occurred before the sexual assault. He was also charged with criminal restraint. Cayer said Lee is also being held on violation of conditions of release from Franklin County, where he had numerous motor vehicle violations.

The arresting officer was Patrolman Michael Halacy.

Cayer said a bondsman in Rumford set the bail at $150,000 surety or $15,000 cash. Lee remained in custody.
