I am somewhat confused about what is being printed or edited from certain stories I am reading in the Sun Journal. For instance, there was a story describing the visit of the author Mary Callahan, who wrote “Memoirs of a Baby Stealer,” to the Lovell Book Club in late September (Oct. 10).
Although the story about Callahan was reported, I was at this meeting, I know the story did not convey the deep concern, questions and interest that was expressed by those attending the meeting.
Mary Callahan, in her book, did an amazing job of exposing what children, biological parents and foster parents must endure at the hands of the Foster Care Division of the Department of Human Services, which seems to be embedded in a culture of bureaucratic rules that refute common sense.
She talked to us about a culture of “us” and “them,” which leads to blaming, iatrogenic solutions, chaotic management, fear and retaliation for those who are overwhelmed and poor or those who dare to question and challenge the infrastructure of the Department of Social Services. My experience has been this has been true of the mental health system as well.
