Meanwhile, crews in Lewiston will continue sewer and waterline work on Main Street.

Last week’s traffic snarls won’t loosen this week, according to Auburn and Lewiston officials.

In Auburn, crews will continue working on Auburn Hall and on a Main Street storm sewer line. Those projects tied up rush hour traffic on both sides of the Longley Memorial Bridge last week and will continue to do so this week.

“Everything we said last week for downtown holds this week,” said City Engineer Steve Ranney.

Traffic delays should be mild elsewhere in Auburn. Pavement Technician Paul Niehoff said he is scheduled to meet with paving contractors this week to settle the city’s fall paving projects.

“We have a couple roads we’d like to do some maintenance on, but it all depends on the contractors and the weather,” Niehoff said.

“Weather is really the biggest variable. If we get more storms, there’s not much we can do. And if it gets cold, naturally we have to stop,” he said.

Sewer work goes on

Meanwhile, crews in Lewiston will continue sewer and waterline work on Main Street at Sabattus Street. Public Works Director Dave Jones said crews were scheduled to finish most of the work this weekend. They’ve been cutting holes in the pavement and pipes at various places to clean them and put in concrete lining.

“It should be as bad as it was last week, but there will be delays,” Jones said. “The cleaning and lining work should be done by Monday but there will still be some patching and cleanup work to do. There could be some delays.”

The Main Street work is just one of the many projects that crews have done over the summer, but it has gotten plenty of attention.

“That happens, especially when you do work on Main Street,” Jones said. “We did try and pick a time of the year when it would have the least impact. We try and avoid the festivals during the summer, but want to get it done before the winter. All we can do is schedule it the best we can and try and limit the effects.”

Farther north on Main Street, Jones said the repaving project between Montello Street and the Greene town line is finished. Crews will be making sure driveways match the new road this week.

On the southern end of the city, River Road will be down to one lane near Plourde Parkway this week, Jones said. Work on relocating utility lines there are continuing through the week.

City contractors will also be putting down asphalt on seven city streets. They are: Bates Street between Birch and Spruce streets; Canal Street between Cedar and Maple streets; Walnut Street between Horton and Howe streets; Charles and Russell streets from Farwell Street to the dead end; Lemaire Avenue from Dow Avenue to the dead end; and Crowley Road from the Sabattus town line to the new pavement.
