LINCOLN N.H. (AP) – The Fish and Game Department on Monday suspended its search for the body of a Massachusetts man missing in the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River.

Lt. Robert Bryant said conservation officers will make periodic checks of the river banks and weather permitting send a helicopter along the river.

Searchers have been looking for Bryan Richards, 39, of Peabody, Mass., since he fell into a whirlpool while trying to save his dog Saturday.

Fish and Game said he rescued the dog, but then his wife saw him go under and not come up in the water below Franconia Falls, about three miles off the Kancamagus Highway.
