WILTON – Selectmen will consider awarding a bid for a wood-harvesting project when they meet Tuesday. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the town office.

In July, officials met with forester Peter Tracy to discuss information he collected and recommendations for a harvest management plan for town-owned property on the old Guy Chandler Road. The property has about 131 acres of abandoned farmland that grew into a heavily forested area over the past 100 to 150 years.

At their last meeting, officials opened five bids for the project. Those bids were reviewed by Tracy and Town Manager Peter Nielsen for recommendations to the board.

Officials will also consider awarding a bid for constructing a replacement septic system under the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Small Community Grant Program.

In other business, officials will hear a report and recommendations from the Wilton Citizens Planning Committee. In August, officials agreed to form the eight-person committee to try to improve the business climate in Wilton. That happened during a meeting with citizens, business owners and members of the Planning Board after officials received a letter from Dennis Taylor of Taylor Made Homes, who charged that the town was anti-business due to its ordinance restrictions and high taxes.

Nielsen said concerns were expressed at the last committee meeting about improving the way Main Street looks, including the appearance of buildings and the way trash is picked up. Committee members said they plan to explore possible grants for the improvement of the downtown area.

The committee also discussed the apathy and lack of involvement by residents in Wilton and high taxes. The committee members said they would research how the town could improve its operations and look at ways to reduce taxes. Nielsen said there also was some talk of code restrictions.

Selectmen will also hear a budget proposal for Channel 11 community access TV, sign appointment papers for a new Wilton police officer and discuss a part-time town office position.
