Benefit show

FARMINGTON – A variety show, “Fun Follies for the Family,” will take place at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, at Mount Blue High School. The admission is minimal, and all proceeds will help rebuild the Fairbanks School meeting house.

The show is for all ages, with local talent performing.

‘Kick-a-thon’

FARMINGTON – Goding’s Tae Kwon Do will hold its fourth annual kick-a-thon/break-a-thon at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at their location at 586 Wilton Road.

Many of Goding’s students will be doing numerous kicks without stopping and breaking boards to raise money for the Care and Share Food Closet in Fairbanks.

This event is open to the public and donations would be appreciated, organizers said.

Creative economy

FARMINGTON – Anyone interested in downtown revitalization, business attraction, cultural life, youth retention, tourism and strengthening communities is being encouraged to attend a local forum on Oct. 29. Mountain Counties Heritage and the Maine Arts Commission will host a Creative Economy Forum from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Afterward, there will be an optional viewing of the film, “Downside Up,” which documents a transformation in the city of North Adams, Mass.

In preparation for a May 2004 Blaine House Conference on the Creative Economy, the steering committee is holding a series of statewide regional forums. The purpose is to present the creative economy concept and gather public input.

Raffling a quilt

FARMINGTON – Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset Counties are holding a quilt raffle to benefit their programs. The quilt was handmade by one of the volunteers. Proceeds will be used to purchase books and learning materials for adult literacy students.

The raffle drawing will be Nov. 20 at the local Literacy Volunteer annual meeting in Farmington.

Literacy Volunteer tutors, who are trained in 18-hour workshops, offer free help with reading to adults. Tutoring is confidential and instruction is based upon learner needs and interests.
