NORTH WATERFORD – Flames swept from a barn to a historic home on Jones Road late Wednesday as gusting winds hampered efforts to save the house at Pleasant View Farms.

Fire crews from Waterford and area towns were battling the blaze at the home of Richard and Frances Jones at 116 Jones Road late Wednesday night.

Fire officials said the barn was fully engulfed in flames when crews first arrived about 8:30 p.m.. Winds swept the fire toward the house, which became engulfed in flames shortly after, according to a witness.

Early reports were that no one was injured in the blaze. The Jones family was able to save a few items from their home before it caught fire, a witness said.

The Jones’ 200-year-old farm is located atop a hill on Jones Road off Route 35 in North Waterford. It was not clear Wednesday night what was inside the barn when it went up in flames.

The 300-acre farm has been in the Jones family since 1778, when a Jones ancestor was granted one square mile of land in payment for his services in the Revolutionary War.

In recent years, the Jones family has been offering horse-drawn sleigh rides to the public. But the farm, all organic, is most noted for chickens, milking cows, beef cattle, horses and bison.

Frances sells eggs and her homemade butter at the farm, according to a recent interview with the Jones family.

Richard and Frances Jones raised six children on the farm, which affords a view of the White Mountains and its foothills. The couple’s son Wallace has been part of the family operation since 1987.

Two hours after the blaze was reported Wednesday night, fire crews were still battling flames. They were expected to remain at the scene into the morning hours Thursday.
