PITTSBURGH – Mario Lemieux’s 1,697th career point was negated by Ron Francis’ 1,759th.

Lemieux’s shot off the post set up Pittsburgh’s only goal as he closed within three points of becoming only the sixth 1,700-point scorer in NHL history, but Francis’ goal gave Carolina a 1-1 tie with the Penguins on Wednesday night.

Carolina (0-2-3) has gotten a point in three of its five games, but remains the NHL’s only winless team.

The Hurricanes are winless through five games for only the second time in franchise history; the 1987-88 Hartford Whalers started 0-5.

Penguins rookie Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 35 of 36 shots in another excellent performance, but a rookie-like mistake by the 18-year-old goalie allowed Francis to score the tying goal and cost the Penguins (1-2-2) a second straight victory.

Fleury left the net midway through the second period to play a loose puck in the right circle, only to become entangled with Hurricanes right wing Radim Vrbata. Francis scooped up the puck and was stopped initially as Fleury and defenseman Josef Melichar sprawled at the lower edge of the circle, but gathered his own rebound and lifted it into the empty net for his 537th career goal.

Wings 4, Blue Jackets 1

DETROIT – Brett Hull moved into a fourth-place tie on the NHL career goals list in the Detroit Red Wings’ 4-1 victory Wednesday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Hull scored his 717th career goal and first of the season to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 5:32 of the second period. The goal tied him with Phil Esposito, and left him behind only Wayne Gretzky (894), Gordie Howe (801) and Marcel Dionne (731).

Detroit, which snapped a two-game losing streak, is undefeated against Columbus in the last 10 meetings (9-0-1).

Hull added an assist, Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist, Tomas Holmstrom scored a power-play goal, and Ray Whitney added a short-handed tally for Detroit.

Brendan Shanahan had three assists.

Maple Leafs 3, Stars 1

DALLAS – Joe Nieuwendyk’s tiebreaking, power-play goal with 6:58 remaining and Ed Belfour’s 15 saves lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.

Nieuwendyk’s deflection of Mats Sundin’s shot got past Dallas goalie Marty Turco to break a 1-all tie and lift the Maple Leafs past the Stars, the team Nieuwendyk led to their only Stanley Cup title in 1999.

He played in Dallas for the first time since the Stars traded him to the New Jersey Devils on March 19, 2002.

Belfour, Dallas’ goalie during its championship run, made the goal stand up. Robert Reichel scored into an empty net for the Maple Leafs with 22.7 seconds left.

Panthers 2, Devils 1

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Jay Bouwmeester and Olli Jokinen scored 42 seconds apart late in the third period and Roberto Luongo made 32 saves Wednesday night to lead the Florida Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

The Panthers snapped a five-game winless streak (0-3-2) and posted their first victory since beating Carolina on opening night.

Bouwmeester tied it at 14:37 with a sharp-angle shot from the right corner that Kristian Huselius appeared to deflect.

Jokinen quickly followed with the game-winner as he knocked the rebound of Niklas Hagman’s shot past Martin Brodeur.
