PORTLAND – Attorney Daniel J. Murphy has joined the law firm of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson and will practice in the firm’s bankruptcy and insolvency practice group in Portland.

The attorneys in the group represent clients in reorganizations and liquidations under Chapter 11 and Chapter 7, large commercial insolvencies, and related litigation in the state, federal and bankruptcy courts primarily in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In addition, the group’s experience and expertise includes litigation involving officers and directors’ liability, lender liability matters, out-of-court restructurings (including workouts, assignments for the benefit of creditors, and receiverships), and commercial and business tort litigation.

Murphy formerly served as a law clerk to the Hon. Leigh I. Saufley, chief justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He is admitted to practice law in Maine and Massachusetts.

A Portland resident, Murphy received his law degree from the University of Maine School of Law and undergraduate degree in 1993 from St. Michael’s College in Vermont. A Lewiston native, Murphy is a 1989 graduate of St. Dominic Regional High School.

Metal Products selects board

WESTBROOK – At the recent Maine Metal Products Association annual meeting, the membership elected Cheryl Bolduc of Southern Maine Industries as president and Pat Butler, president of Butler Bros, to the board of directors.

National Institute of Metalworking Skills director Steve Mandes recognized Mid-Maine Technical Center and Central Maine Community College for receiving their NIMS certification. Also, the association recognized Bonita Pothier for her service on the board of directors.

Commissioner to be guest speaker

PORTLAND – Jack Cashman, commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development, will be the guest speaker at the Nov. 13 breakfast meeting of the Maine Satellite Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association of New England Inc.

It will be held at the new Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Portland.

Cashman will speak on the topic of “Economic Development plans under the Baldacci Administration.”

The Baldacci administration has identified four cornerstones to its economic development plans: investing in human capital, building a seamless infrastructure, investing in key sectors of Maine’s economy, and creating a stable business environment. Cashman will elaborate on this outline and also address issues that have been characterized as creating an “unfriendly business climate” in the state.

He is a 1973 graduate of the University of Maine, served in the state House of Representatives, was president of the Old Town City Council and worked for more than 25 years in Bangor’s real estate and insurance business.

The Maine Satellite Chapter provides a forum for professionals who are involved in working with troubled companies. The Maine chapter is a satellite of the New England chapter, based in Boston.
