It’s so refreshing to hear about a politician who does what he was elected to do – look out for the interests of his constituents. Auburn is fortunate to have such a politician in Bob Mennealy. Every municipality should have one, two, three or more individuals like Mr. Mennealy, individuals who are not afraid to confront administrations instead of rubber-stamping everything presented to them.

As I look at the makeup of the current City Council in Lewiston, I cringe. The citizens of Lewiston have not had any representation since they were elected. These city councilors should go down in history as the most inept. They question nothing and rubber-stamp everything.

Why waste time and money on campaigns, elections and inaugurations if elected officials insist on sitting idly by, ignoring campaign promises, refusing to get involved and afraid to take a stand on issues because it might be unpopular with management or because they fear relentless attacks from their fellow politicians?

Debate is good, and criticism is strengthening when done properly. Let’s encourage good, caring citizens to run for public office without fear of retaliation for asking questions or looking out for the needs of the community instead of the needs of a select few. Let’s stand behind the Bob Mennealy’s of this world.

Jacqueline P. Smith,

Lewiston
