ANAHEIM, Calif. – Joffrey Lupul scored on a power play with 7:10 left in the third period and Martin Gerber made 25 saves as the Anaheim Mighty Ducks tied the Chicago Blackhawks 1-1 Sunday night.
Chicago’s Scott Nichol was off for holding Petr Sykora when the Ducks pulled even. Niclas Havelid got the puck in the high slot from Steve Rucchin, faked a slap shot and slid the puck to Lupul, who one-timed it past goaltender Michael Leighton’s stick for his second NHL goal and second in as many games. Leighton made 31 saves.
The best chance either team had in overtime came 35 seconds into the extra period, when Chicago’s Nathan Dempsey tried to redirect Steve Sullivan’s feed from the top of the left circle before Gerber slid out to steer it away.
Sabres 3, Avalanche 1
DENVER – Former Colorado player Chris Drury scored with 2:23 left and Martin Biron stopped 32 shots as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Avalanche 3-1 Sunday night.
Buffalo has won three straight to climb over .500 (5-4) for the first time this season.
Drury skated in alone across the blue line after Jean-Pierre Dumont squeezed a puck along the boards, then beat Phil Sauve to the glove side from the right circle.
Dumont added an empty-net goal with 58 seconds left, also his second. Colorado had a two-man advantage for 1:05 early in the third period, but couldn’t get past Biron. He made three tough saves in traffic and Joe Sakic hit the crossbar on another shot.
Biron also toppled over like a domino midway through the third after squeezing a shot by Alex Tanguay between his pads, then blocked another from close range by Milan Hejduk on a power play.
Dan Hinote hit the right post with five minutes left at the end of the power play.
Buffalo’s Ales Kotalik opened the scoring two minutes into the second period, redirecting Rory Fitzpatrick’s shot from the left circle past Sauve on a power play for his third of the season.
Tanguay tied it with five minutes left in the period, lifting a shot just under the bar on a power play. Peter Forsberg set up Tanguay’s third of the year by slipping a pass behind two defensemen after Hejduk skated past.
It was the 700th career point for Forsberg, who stood up from the bench, smiled and raised his stick to acknowledge a standing ovation from the crowd.
The line of Forsberg, Tanguay and Hejduk has 21 points in three games, including three Sunday. Tanguay has a six-game points streak with three goals and seven assists, while Forsberg has seven points in three games.
Notes: Colorado recalled LW Travis Brigley from Hershey before the game. … Buffalo has scored power play goals in seven straight games. … Colorado LW Brad Larsen didn’t play the final two periods due to a groin injury. … Colorado had killed off 16 straight penalties before Kotalik’s goal in the second period. … Miroslav Satan needs one goal to become the 10th Buffalo player to reach 200.
