1915 – 2003

NORWAY – Laurence Allan Griffiths, 88, of Bell Hill Road, Otisfield, died Oct. 27, at a Norway hospital.

Born in Antler, Saskatchewan, Canada, June 14, 1915, the son of Joseph and Pearl Grace Sallans Griffiths, he attended schools in York and Berwick, graduating from Berwick High School Class of 1934. He then attended Northeastern University in Boston.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist during World War II and then as a salesman selling the Book of Knowledge.

Along with his wife, Crescentia, they owned and operated the L.A. Griffiths Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Eliot for 15 years. After the sale of the business, he was employed for 13 years as an appraiser for the Federal Housing Administration, retiring from there in 1973.

After retirement, Mr. Griffiths became a gentleman farmer, working his own land in Otisfield. He enjoyed cutting and splitting wood every year to burn in his wood furnace and bush hogging his fields.

He was a member of the Crooked River Lodge of Masons, the Casco Village Church and the United Methodist Church of Orono. He enjoyed hunting, playing bridge, cribbage and acey deucey.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Crescentia Zahn Griffiths of Otisfield and Auburn; one son, Wayne Allan Griffiths of Lewiston; two daughters, Ann G. Bearce of Raymond and Donna L. Mann of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Leslie Osgood of Lunenburg, Mass.; three grandchildren, Nicholas Allan Bearce, Alice Marie S. Wolf and Scott Allan Griffiths; and three great-grandchildren, Jillian Carrin Griffiths, Clayton Allan Griffiths and Jackson Ryan Griffiths.
