RUMFORD – In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Rumford Library, the newly formed Friends of Library held its first official meeting Saturday, Oct. 18. The group discussed possible future events, including an anniversary celebration in 2004. New members are welcome, membership forms are available at the library.

Rumford Librarian Karl Aromaa acknowledged the generous contributions of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the services and support of the Maine State Library. Aromaa noted that enhanced technology now makes it possible to access 50 public and academic libraries in the state, an offering of 8 million library selections, any of which can be delivered the next day. Requests can be made at the library or online at home. For students, The Maine Electronic Database is allied with the laptop program and provides access to a reserve of journals and newspapers.

Friends of Library will meet again in January. Plans will continue for library advocacy, community events and possible fund-raising.
