RUMFORD – For the third time in five years, Black Mountain will host hundreds of skiers and thousands of support people during the Chevy Truck U.S. Nationals.

The event, set for Jan. 3 to 11, is expected to be an economic boon for the area as motels, hotels and other lodging places fill up for the week.

Peter Phillips, director of skiing at Black Mountain, said cross-country skiers are expected to come from all over the country, as well as from Canada. The American skiers will vie for a spot on the U.S. ski team, which competes in World Cup and other international races. Canadian skiers will compete for slots on their international team.

“Black Mountain has a reputation as a well-run race. It is one of a few centers that have met all the criteria for such races,” said Phillips.

In addition to the U.S. national championship, competitions will include several hundred youth skiers who will race to earn points for other events.

And during the last day of the nationals, several hundred more young skiers will arrive in the area to compete in the New England Nordic Ski Association’s Banknorth Eastern Cup race, one of eight competitions held to choose members of the Junior Olympics, which are held in Lake Placid, N.Y.

With thousands of visitors expected in the River Valley, Phillips said he is working with the area Chamber of Commerce and other organizations to put together activities for the skiers and their supporters, as well as to involve the community.

“We’re trying to build a winter carnival atmosphere. This is a chance to showcase the River Valley,” he said.

One of the events, he said, will be something called “Ski with the Best” where some of the top athletes will provide ski clinics for local youngsters.

“The carnival idea hasn’t yet gotten going,” said Phillips. “But we want to bring in the community more.”

More detailed plans will be available as the January races draw nearer.
