RUMFORD – A Tennessee man was released from Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston Wednesday morning after falling off a ladder on Oct. 22 while working at MeadWestvaco Corp.

Steve Davis, Corporate Risk and Safety Manager at Chattanooga Boiler and Tank Co. Inc., said Bill Davis, no relation, sustained three injured ribs and a fractured right wrist after falling 10 feet.

“It was a scare to us, but he’s all right and his wife’s driving him home,” Steve Davis said from Chattanooga late Wednesday afternoon.

“Bill didn’t have a head injury but he did suffer from shock.”

Med-Care Ambulance treated and transported the injured man to Rumford Hospital initially.

A 12-year employee of the Tennessee company, Bill Davis, 54, of Chattanooga, had been working with a crew on a coal silo rebuild project at the Rumford paper mill.

When his shift ended at about 6 p.m., Steve Davis said Bill Davis started down the ladder to head for a local motel where the Chattanooga crews were staying.

“He didn’t watch his feet on the way down and thinks he missed a rung,” Steve Davis added.

The Chattanooga company had gone without accident in its last 19 projects across the country.

“On Friday, we talked to all of our crews about it. Everyone in the entire company got re-trained in ladder safety,” he said.
