Selectmen also discussed doors

for the fire station.

WEST PARIS – Selectmen gave the Fire Department the go ahead Thursday to order new turnout gear, hose stock and fittings from the Fire Tech & Safety Equipment Co.

Deputy Fire Chief Tom Spear said the equipment will cost about $9,600, a price that can be covered through the Fire Department’s special equipment reserve account.

“The quote from Fire Tech and Safety isn’t a final quote, but we’re sure it is very close,” said Spear, “and we will have an exact price when everything is totaled and the order filled. We’re pretty sure there won’t be much change in the rough quote.”

Spear told Selectman Howard Gurney the department has $9,913.23 available in its accounts, slightly more than what is needed.

The vote to approve the expenditure was unanimous and the order will be submitted immediately.

Selectmen also voted to contract with L&M Heating of Canton for cleaning furnaces at the town office, highway garage and library for a cost of $70 per furnace.

Board Chairman Wade Rainey said, “There are four furnaces to be cleaned. One in the town office, two in the garage and one at the library for a total of $280.”

A discussion was held regarding bids for four doors for the fire station, but the issue was tabled until the board’s next meeting on Nov. 6 to get one more quote from Bob’s Overhead Doors of Lewiston before awarding a contract.

The International Door Co. of Lewiston submitted a bid of $9,410.43, and the White Mountain Overhead Door Co. quoted a price of $14,000.

As for Bob’s Overhead Door Co., Spear said it had quoted $9,618 for doors in 2001, “but I expect that price will probably be higher when we get an updated price.”

The board noted the quote from International Door does not include electrical work needed for installation of automatic door openers, but White Mountain did include that work. As a result, a quote on wiring will also be obtained.

In other business, selectmen voted to contract with C&G Heating of Waterford for installation of a furnace at the fire station if the quote of $5,128.76 includes construction of a raised base for the furnace. Awarding the contract is also contingent on a guarantee that C&G can complete the installation before the end of November.

The only furnace bid was from L&M Heating of Canton for $5,349.14, which does not include installation of the raised base.
