Craig Tracy allegedly assaulted the victim while she was sleeping.

NEW SHARON – A Canton man was being held on $7,500 cash or $75,000 surety for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a New Sharon residence. Craig Tracy, 20, appeared Friday in Rumford District Court.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Heidi Gould charged Craig Tracy, 20, on Thursday with gross sexual assault and violating conditions of release, said county Detective David St. Laurent.

The Sheriff’s Department received a call about 6:45 a.m. Thursday from an adult female from southern Maine reporting a sexual assault.

Gould, Sgt. Steven Lowell and State Trooper Scott Dalton responded to the residence on Route 2 in New Sharon.

The woman was visiting friends for a party, the detective said.

She had gone to sleep and woke up to find Tracy allegedly sexually assaulting her, St. Laurent said.

Tracy had also attended the party.

A sexual assault response team, which included Dr. Constance Adler and Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Service members, responded to help the victim.

The victim picked her alleged attacker from a photograph lineup, St. Laurent said.

Gould, Lowell, county Lt. Niles Yeaton and Deputy Aaron Turcotte, along with Dalton and State Police Trooper Peter Michaud, went to the mobile home where the alleged assault took place to collect evidence, St. Laurent said.

Tracy was held without bail at Franklin County jail until he appeared in Rumford District Court Friday and bail was set.

Tracy remained at the Franklin County jail Friday afternoon, a jail representative said.
