LEWISTON – Voters have one last chance before Tuesday’s election to avoid long lines at the City Clerk’s office.
The office will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday for new voter registration and absentee ballot voting, according to City Clerk Kathy Montejo.
“We know that on Monday and Tuesday, the lines can get pretty long,” Montejo said. “It’s not all that uncommon to have a 45-minute wait to get into our office. So if they can make it in Saturday, that would be beneficial.”
People can register to vote or change their official address right up until Election Day, Montejo said. They need some proof that they actually live at their new address, such as a driver’s license, lease or utility bill.
People can also pick up and drop off absentee ballots on Saturday, Montejo said. So far, 1,208 people have picked up absentee ballots and all but 175 have returned them.
“Some people may have picked them up early in October and then decided to wait closer to Election Day to vote,” Montejo said. “But now is the time. We need to get those returned to us by Tuesday.”
Voters can pick up absentee ballots for themselves and vote on Saturday and Monday. They also can pick up ballots for friends and neighbors on Tuesday, but those ballots all must be returned to the city and in the City Clerk’s hands by the time polls close on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
