Maine will be able to retrofit approximately 300 buses statewide.

NORWAY – SAD 17 was one 20 Maine school districts to receive a Clean School Bus USA grant that will pay for equipment to clean emissions from diesel buses.

Transportation Director Ron Deegan said on Friday that 27 buses would be retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts. These devices use a chemical process to break down pollutants in the exhaust stream into less harmful components. It is estimated the controls will cut pollutants by 20 percent.

In 2007, school buses will face more stringent federal emission standards.

The money comes from a $5 million national grant. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection will administer the $567,376 state share of the grant.

According to the DEP, Maine will be able to retrofit approximately 300 buses statewide with pollution control equipment.

In the Tri-county area, SAD 9 in Farmington and SAD 52 in Turner also received grants.

Deegan said the individual amount of grants to each school district was unknown, because they are working with the DEP to purchase the equipment as a whole for the state.

Deegan said the DEP plans to have the equipment ready to install in the summer of 2004.
