Most of us who care a wit about anything, always feel somewhat embarrassed when anyone tells us “I told you so.”

At the time, in the mid to late-90s, it didn’t take a legal genius to realize that the contractual agreements that the city was getting into with Tom Platz were flawed and could pose a future financial disaster for the city. When we pointed this out to the then city manager and members of the city council, they laughed.

Well, an article the Sun Journal (Oct. 29) pretty much says it all, “we told you so” over and over until we were blue in the face.

Its currently costing the city $750,000-plus per year, simply to maintain the Bates Mill Complex. To satisfy the contractual agreements with Tom Platz, our present city manager estimates that it will cost Lewiston taxpayers nearly $60 million.

When the city acquired the Bates Mills for tax arrears, many offered several suggestions as to what the city should do. How we became “partners” with Platz is for someone else to explain.

When will we learn that a government entity does not belong in the realm of business enterprises?

No one can blame Mr. Platz for his astuteness and business acumen for his actions on the Bates Mill Complex. I certainly can’t. I admire the man.

Where will the millions to pay off Mr. Platz come from? I can’t wait for an honest and realistic answer to that question.
