AUBURN – Lakeesha Holloman of Lewiston drained 23 points to lead Central Maine Community College to a 71-32 win over Eastern Maine Community College in women’s basketball action Tuesday.
Meagan Lever contributed 18 points on seven field goals, including a 3-pointer, and three free throws to assist the Mustangs (1-0) in their season opener. Andrea Owens hauled down 11 rebounds, while Holloman tallied seven.
Jessica Fitzmaurice lead Eastern Maine Community College (0-1) with 10 points on four field goals and a pair of free throws in the loss.
Field hockey
Southern Maine 6, Framingham 0
GORHAM – Sophomore Kayla Vaughan netted a pair of goals to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 6-0 blanking of Framingham State in field hockey action.
The Huskies (15-5) wasted no time as Vaughan scored the first goal 33 seconds into the contest on a feed from senior Renee Heath of Brunswick. Vaughan also netted the second goal of the half to give the Huskies a 2-0 margin at the half.
Junior Libby Asselin of Lewiston capped the scoring with the Huskies’ sixth goal at the 62:20 mark.
Goalie Jessie Superchi earned the shutout victory in goal for the Huskies with one save, while Lindsay McKearney made 10 saves for the Rams (6-9) in the loss.
UMF 2, Becker 1
FARMINGTON – Kristy Veazie scored the game-winner as the University of Maine at Farmington nudged Becker College, 2-1, in the NAC Championship semifinals Tuesday.
The Beavers (11-7) initiated the scoring off a penalty stroke from Mary Berry with 16:49 remaining in the first half. Brianna Ellis answered for Becker (17-3) eight minutes later with a goal assisted by Elizabeth Hathaway.
Goalie Ashley Biette made seven saves for the Beavers, while Brook Robichaud also had seven deflections for Becker in the loss.
Women’s soccer
Maine 3, UMBC 1
ORONO – Kate Crawford notched a pair of goals to lead the University of Maine to a 3-1 win over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in the first round of the America East Women’s Soccer Championship Tuesday.
Crawford broke a 1-1 tie in the 60th minute for the Black Bears (13-3-1) from 10 yards out on a pass from Kim Walsh. Crawford and Walsh combined again in the 76th minute for an insurance goal.
The Retrievers (7-8-1) opened up the scoring in the 18th minute when Maine failed to clear the ball in front of the goalkeeper and Amanda DiCarlo redirected a low shot into the far post.
The Black Bears evened the game in the 39th minute when Emily Stevens scored from 15 yards out.
Men’s basketball
UMaine-Augusta 71, Unity 70 (OT)
AUGUSTA – Darrold Harbin nailed 15 points on seven field goals with seven assists and four steals to lead the University of Maine at Augusta to a 71-70 overtime win over Unity College in men’s basketball action Tuesday.
Chris Melgard chipped in with 14 points, while Jeff Couture and Chris Blodgett tallied double doubles on 12 points and 10 rebounds apiece. Melgard notched three 3-point field goals for the Moose (1-0).
Jeremy Kervin led Unity (1-2) with 28 points on 12 field goals and four from the line in the loss.
