What has lots of food, lots of people, and lots of fun? A feast of course! A feast is exactly what the juniors and seniors English class of Central Maine Christian Academy had this past Monday.

This English class is currently studying medieval stories in their literature book, so instead of a test, these students decided to have a feast; complete with costumes, music and food from the period. A few of the original traditions were also observed, such as the breaking of bread and greeting the guests.

Even the teachers joined in the fun! Pat St. Hilaire, Central Maine’s principal and English teacher, also sat down to a meal of beef stew, apple cider, and traditional bread.

The students were divided into groups, where they worked on costumes and food. Deanna Mattaliano, Matthew Cyr, and Jason Gray provided the food, and Amelia Hansen, Sarina Smith, Ryan Robbins, and Leora Henry created the costumes.

Afterwards, the class finished reading the story Beowulf and then continued on to read and guess some medieval riddles. They wrote some of thier own.

Acquires the flame to warm the house,

I am a messenger, and a giver of information and entertainment.

At times I am useful,

At others I destroy.

Although people say it is too much,

Put your nose to the grind,

And don’t blame others for your problems.

It helps you learn so get over your pride and do it.

Answer: homework

It cries out to be heard

So we can all hear and learn.

I dislike the topic altogether,

To hear of old and not the new.

We learn from past mistakes,

But when it does not concern me,

I refuse to listen.

But I know it is wrong to disobey,

So I listen to the old and the new.

Answer: history

Deanna Mattaliano, junior
