Historical society
FARMINGTON – The Farmington Historical Society will meet Monday, Nov. 10, at the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church on Academy Street. There will be a potluck supper at 6 p.m. followed by a business meeting and program at 7 p.m. Megan Roberts will give a presentation about North Chesterville in late 1800s and early 1900s. Slides, pictures and letters will complement the talk. Guests and new members are welcome.
Cost of war in Iraq
FARMINGTON – Roy Van Til, Ph.D., will speak about the “Economic Costs to America of the War on Iraq” at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in C23, Roberts Learning Center at the University of Maine at Farmington. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Van Til, a former UMF associate professor of economics, will discuss the historical, geopolitical and economic context for estimating the costs of this type of regime change and nation building.
Van Til’s unique perspective about the economic aspects of political and military decisions is spiced with wit, according to organizers of the event.
Western Mountains Peace Action Workshop is inviting all citizens who wish to explore the current path of American foreign policy to attend.
Veterans Day
WILTON – The Wilton Free Public Library will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. The library will open at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Alliance meeting
FARMINGTON – The next Tumbledown Conservation Alliance meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in Room 207 of Ricker addition at the University of Maine at Farmington. Included on the agenda will be a discussion of the alliance’s new brochure.
Homeless teens
FARMINGTON – A special meeting concerning teenage homelessness will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Clergy of Franklin County, local service providers and anyone who may be interested in the problem or solution of homelessness in the area are being invited to attend.
Franklin County Refuge will share its purpose, vision and plans, and receive input from service providers.
Town office closed
JAY – The Jay Town Office will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.
School conferences

Driver education
SALEM – A new driver education class will begin Monday, Nov. 17. Classes will be from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Mount Abram High School. Registration may be done at the Adult Education Office in Kingfield. Students must bring an original birth certificate and a signed Social Security card when they register. A parent or guardian must also be present for registration. The course is $500. People can phone 265-5511, extension 7, for registration appointments.
