Last year it was evident that the teachers at Elm Street School were picketing for a contract (only until school started and then these teachers would begin their classes as normal). Not following the situation, it was a surprise to me the other day when I read on one of the teacher’s doors that they were teaching without a contract.

ESS teachers are very dedicated. They do a wonderful job and are pleasant to be around. The children are happy there.

I am completely stunned. The politicians can rattle over money for a casino, large amounts of money for Iraq, money to run for office and on and on. Lewiston had to talk to the Sun Journal to even get attention from Sen. Olympia Snow.

I think Elm Street School deserves more funding than they are receiving, and I think a year is enough time to be granted a contract.

I hear a lot of complaints how the schools are doing. The paper loves to print all the bad reports regarding scholastics, but do you bother to see the inside of schools, the teachers, how the teachers are managing and what is being done about their trials?

I think it is time someone came up with a solution for Elm Street School, the staff and the students. How many children would be learning if these teachers decided not to teach in Maine?
