WALES – Police have charged two teens with knocking down more than 80 headstones in a Wales cemetery last week.
Christopher Campbell, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile, both of Wales, were charged with aggravated criminal mischief in connection with the vandalism.
The caretaker of the Route 132 cemetery discovered the damage on the morning of Oct. 30 and called police immediately.
A few days later, Maine State Police Trooper Matt Griffin received information from two people leading him to the 17-year-old. The boy admitted to knocking over the headstones with two other men, one of whom was Campbell, Griffin said.
Griffin charged Campbell on Thursday after finding him at the 17-year-old’s house. According to Griffin, Campbell admitted to helping knock over the stones.
The other suspect, another adult who lives in Wales, has not been questioned about the incident. Griffin said Thursday evening that he is still searching for him.
If convicted of aggravated criminal mischief, a felony charge, the teen could be sent to a state juvenile detention center until he turns 18, and Campbell could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
Many of the stones that were knocked over were more than 100 years old.
