CLINTON, N.Y. – Oodles of yardage, including two running backs over the century mark, didn’t amount to much for Bates College in the Bobcats’ final NESCAC football game of the season Saturday.

Brandon Holtslag threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to lead Hamilton to a 16-7 victory, spoiling a big afternoon by freshmen Jamie Walker and Eric Oberg.

Walker scored on a 14-yard touchdown run with 6:11 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the Bobcats within three at 10-7.

Hamilton needed only two plays to squelch the comeback. Ian Chambers returned the ensuing kickoff 44 yards to the Bates 31-yard line. From there, Holtslag (10-for-27, 206 yards) found Kevin Conole for the score.

Both teams finished 2-6.

Walker rushed for 151 yards on 35 carries. Eric Obeng, who spent most of the season as a backup defensive end, added 112 yards on 19 carries.

Bates dominated the game in almost all offensive categories, including a two-to-one edge in time of possession and a 424 to 262 cushion in total yardage. The Bobcats didn’t commit any turnovers, either, but they failed to score on two drives of more than 10 plays.

With the game still scoreless in the second quarter, the Bobcats drove from their own 22 to the Hamilton 19. Walker carried seven times for 32 yards on the march, which ended on downs when Chris Gwozdz threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-9.

Hamilton, leading 3-0 on a 37-yard field goal, was similarly stymied on a lengthy drive to open the second half. Luis Martinez halted that bid at the Bates 13 with his second interception of the season.

Bates took over on its own 7 and drove 88 yards in 19 plays, but the Continentals stopped the Bobcats’ progress at the 5, and Nat Carr’s 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

Holtslag gave Hamilton a 10-0 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter, connecting with Tom Tidgwell for a 46-yard TD.

The Bobcats finally cashed in at the end of a long drive. Walker capped an 11-play, 90-yard surge with a 14-yard run for the second score of his freshman campaign.

Seniors Kurt Chapman of Brunswick (nine tackles) and Owen Miehe (nine catches for 77 yards) shone in their final game for Bates. Junior Mike Horan sacked Holtslag twice.

Bates won multiple games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1986-87.
