HUDSON, N.H. (AP) – Accused of dodging tough questions, Democrat John Kerry offered a direct answer to a high school student’s problem Friday – a phone call on the boy’s behalf to the college of his choice.

Kaylon Sweet, a senior at Alvirne High School, confronted the Massachusetts senator about his appearance in a presidential debate earlier this week, asking why the candidates weren’t more straightforward.

“Tell me why the politicians dance around the answers,” Sweet said.

Kerry insisted he had offered clear answers, and challenged the teenager to name one question he had ducked.

“I really believe I answered every question directly,” he said.

Sweet said he couldn’t recall specific questions, but gave Kerry a new one: How would he help Sweet get into Boston University, given the school’s high tuition rates?

Kerry rattled off several detailed proposals, including his plans to create a $4,000 tax credit for college tuition and boost college loan and grant programs. But his final idea was the clincher:

“Finally, I’ll make a phone call to BU, if you’re a good guy,” he said.
