RUMFORD – A Rumford man was arrested Sunday morning following an investigation into an alleged domestic assault Saturday night.
Jerry W. Hubbard, 49, of 104 Somerset St., was apprehended without incident while out for a drive at 10:38 a.m. Sunday, shortly before several officers – armed with arrest and search warrants – were to converge on his house, police said.
Hubbard was charged with possession of firearms by a prohibited person and terrorizing with a dangerous weapon (both Class C felonies), domestic assault and criminal restraint. After failing to post $10,000 cash bail, he was transported to Oxford County jail.
Police learned about the alleged domestic assault when Hubbard’s estranged wife called at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, reporting that her husband had assaulted, threatened, and restrained her.
Investigating officer Daniel Garbarini said he interviewed the victim at 9:27 a.m. when she arrived at the station.
The victim alleged that Hubbard had assaulted her, then took out a knife, made a threatening remark, and prohibited her from leaving, Garbarini said Sunday night.
“He eventually allowed her to leave and she reported the incident, but wanted to come to the station,” he added. She showed signs of bruising and red marks on her body, he said.
While interviewing the victim, Garbarini said he learned that Hubbard had several firearms.
Garbarini ran a routine criminal records check on Hubbard and learned that Hubbard was a convicted felon in New Jersey and was forbidden from possessing firearms.
Garbarini said he then applied for and received search and arrest warrants, which were slated to be executed Sunday morning.
But as Detective Lt. Wayne Gallant was briefing a team of officers and Maine Drug Enforcement agents Sunday on the warrants, a surveillance unit watching Hubbard’s house, reported seeing him drive away from the residence, Sgt. George Cayer said. The officers then headed out to assist in the arrest.
After Hubbard was taken into custody by Rumford officer Eric DeWitt, Oxford County police and a drug-detection dog from Franklin County police helped Rumford cops search Hubbard’s Somerset Street residence.
There, they found and seized drug paraphernalia, seven shotguns and six rifles. The knife used to allegedly threaten the victim was also seized.
Garbarini said he expected more charges to be filed against Hubbard once the investigation is complete.
