Jody Shelley punches in a pair of goals for Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Enforcer Jody Shelley had his first career two-goal game and the Columbus Blue Jackets rediscovered their power play in a 4-3 victory Sunday over the Calgary Flames.

Shelley, a scar-faced tough guy who led the NHL in penalty minutes last season, had only four goals in his previous 145 games. He had one career two-point game.

Shelley hadn’t had a goal in 53 games before he redirected defenseman Scott Lachance’s blast from the blue line at 14:22 of the first period to tie it 1-1. It was the first time he ever scored a power-play goal.

Columbus was 3-for-8 on the power play after failing to convert on its last 12 opportunities and scoring on just two of 37 man-advantages the previous eight games.

Hurricanes 1, Lightning 1

RALEIGH, N.C. – Marty Murray scored his first goal in a Carolina uniform and goaltender Jamie Storr held off Tampa Bay in overtime to help the Hurricanes tie the Lightning 1-1 Sunday.

Tampa Bay was coming off a 9-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday night, but didn’t generate much offense against the tight-checking Hurricanes and were outshot 38-22 in regulation.

The shot total was a season-high for Carolina, 2-0-1 in its last three home games.

But Tampa Bay outshot Carolina 4-1 in overtime but couldn’t beat Storr.

Avalanche 4, Blackhawks 3

CHICAGO – Steve Konowalchuk scored his second goal of the game on a deflection with 5.5 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night.

Konowalchuk redirected Martin Skoula’s low shot from the point high over the shoulder of goalie Michael Leighton. Konowalchuk scored on a mid-air deflection with 8:44 left in the third period to tie it at 3. He has five points in three games with the Avalanche since being acquired from Washington on Oct. 23.

Colorado’s Alex Tanguay also scored in the third period to help the Avalanche rally from a 3-1 deficit. Milan Hejduk scored in the first period for Colorado, undefeated in four games (3-0-1)

Mighty Ducks 2, Coyotes 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Petr Sykora scored 3:43 into overtime and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 27 saves as the Anaheim Mighty Ducks beat the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 Sunday night.

Steve Rucchin scored a short-handed goal for the Ducks, who returned from a six-game road trip that ended with overtime losses at St. Louis and Phoenix.

Giguere, last season’s playoff MVP, improved to 2-8. His only other victory also came in overtime, Oct. 22 against Philadelphia.

Sykora ended this one with a wrist shot from the middle of the left circle that beat Sean Burke high to the glove side. Sergei Fedorov assisted for his first point in five games and the 965th of his career, tying Maurice Richard for 71st place on the NHL career list.
