Flames jumped from a lumber fire.

RUMFORD – Three area fire departments turned out for what at first was believed to be a structure fire Monday afternoon. Instead, it turned out to be a rather large brush and grass fire.

Rumford Fire Department Lt. Keith Bickford said firefighters responded to a camp road off 76 Andover Road where Ricky Merchant was burning a pile of lumber during mid-afternoon. The flames jumped from the wood pile to the grass and leaves, then started to burn around the wood line. Firefighters were able to stop the uncontrolled burn before it got into the woods.

About a half-dozen Rumford firefighters and several more from the Andover and Mexico fire departments fought the blaze. A Maine forest ranger was also called in because the fire involved trees.

Bickford said a 100-by-100-foot area was burned. The nearby camp was not damaged.
